Review of Mark Padmore and Paul Lewis’ New Recording of Schubert’s Winterreise

A week ago I wrote about the new recording of Winterreise by Mark Padmore and Paul Lewis, and today I find a fantastic review of it over at wosu.org, the website for WOSU public media. The reviewer Jennifer Hambrick clearly knows her lieder and her Winterreise. The review features four excellent musical excerpts which each highlight sections of the recording which are unique and remarkable. Check it out.

In this cyberspace community my reviewing of Padmore’s Winterreise led me to you, and I am delighted to find your blog. I review vocal and Lieder for American Record Guide and have reviewed 8 or 10 CDs of the cycle in the past 5 years. I consider this cycle to be the high water mark of the literature. I, too, thought Jennifer Hambrick;’s review was brilliant. Though I am confined to fewer words, I am actually planning to quote her in my review. Thanks for all your postings.

    Best wishes,
