This week classical.com is giving away a complete recording of Winterreise: Thomas Dewey (Piano), Margaret Price (Soprano). Unfortunately you must create a free account to download it. However, I went though the steps and got the recording as promised. You can find it here:
Warning: I downloaded the 192kbps version first and found it to be full of clicks and other rip artifacts. The 128kbps version, however, seems to be fine.
UPDATE: Listening to the 128kbps version and I have encountered some terrible pops and squeaks and skips in Der greise Kopf and other later tracks. Beware.
Youtube user civileso has created a great video of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Jorg Demus performing “Erstarrung” while matching sheet music is displayed two measures at a time. Listening to a world class recording while following along in a score is, perhaps, the best way to truly appreciate Schubert’s Winterreise, and this video basically does it for you.
My only gripe with this video is that the key of performance does not match the key of the score being displayed.
The folks over at the Schubert Institute UK have compiled a detailed interactive discography of Winterreise. It currently has information on 467 recordings of the cycle. As a collector this piece, having this exhaustive listing has been invaluable.
